Trolling, Anti-Semitism, Bigotry and The Big Phuck You
Lately...there appears to be a sizeable amount of Anti-Semitism and Anti-Zionism floating around The Local thanks to some guileless, witless, nutless trolls who make a few posts and disappear. Now...before anyone thinks that TL is a hot bed of bigotry, I should like to state that it is not. It is quite the opposite, as a matter of fact. Otherwise...I seriously doubt that I would invest as much time in the forum as I do.
Usually...when I stumble across one of these threads, I will make myself known as TL's resident Jewess. The reasons behind such behaviour are too numerous to list. In a nutshell, however, I am not a Zionist, per se, nor do I appreciate racist comments of any kind (be they directed at me or anyone else). It has always been a bitter pill for me to swallow, living among the hate. In my own, naive way, I hope that I can effect change by showing bigots the err of their ways. If I cannot effect change, I do take pleasure in getting a really good laugh from their blatant stupidity by posting pictures of Mr Ed (just an example).
Anyhooo...to my point.
One thing that has resonated in me (about being a Jew, a minority, what have you) for quite some time now is Mel Brooks' interview on 60 Minutes with Mike Wallace. I like Mel Brooks. I'm not the "biggest" fan. I actually *gasps* found Blazing Saddles a bit trite, but I admire him. He is a creative man. I admire and respect Mel Brooks for more than the obvious. I admire Mel Brooks' way of turning the tables on the Anti-Semites, the bigots and pond-scum of this world. He is this special way of telling the haters of this world to phuck off. I think that is...well...special, extraordinary and beyond admirable.
For those of you who are curious, you can read the interview here. For those of you who want a snippet, I think the best quote is:
"What about it? What about it? What's so wrong? What's the matter with being a Jew? I think there's a lot of that way down deep beneath all the quick Jewish jokes that I do," - Mel Brooks
So...that is what I am thinking about right now.
Have we not evolved enough as a species to move beyond the categorization of people for the sake of hate? Are people so devoid of creativity that the only thing they feel comfortable attacking is someone's race, colour, creed or sexual orientation?
As I tell the haters I encounter...I am who I am and I am not going anywhere.
